How it is calculated

Every month: you pay 12% of basic, your employer pays 12% of which 8.33% (on wages up to Rs 25,000) goes to the pension scheme (EPS) and the rest to EPF. Interest accrues monthly and is credited yearly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EPF interest rate?

8.25% for 2025-26. The rate for 2026-27 is usually announced around February or March.

What changed in the EPF wage ceiling?

From 17 September 2026 the ceiling is Rs 25,000 a month, so the employer's maximum pension share is Rs 2,083 a month.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Interest on your own contributions above Rs 2.5 lakh a year (Rs 5 lakh if your employer does not contribute) is taxable.

Do I get a pension from EPF?

The EPS part pays a monthly pension after 10 years of service. The estimate here uses the classic formula and may differ from EPFO's final figure.
